Meet Our Pastor
Rev. Mitch Becker, in his own words:
They say you go to the desert to find God. I like to think that's why I have been called to First Christian Church of Antelope Valley. Although I feel I found God nearly forty years ago, as a young adult, my journey continues now in this my seventh pastorate.
I was born on the Oregon coast August 4, 1952 in a town called Tillamook. Tillamook and the surrounding area is known as the "Land of cheese, trees and ocean breeze." Perhaps you have visited the famous cheese factory located on the north side of town? My father was a log scaler, someone that measures and grades the logs that are brought to the log mill for processing. He was often moved around from mill to mill, consequently we lived in several different cities throughout the state. We finally settled in Albany where I attended high school.
Some of my fondest memories come after high school when I enrolled at Linn-Benton Community College. There I earned two associate degrees. After LBCC I attended Oregon State University and earned a Bachelors Degree in Science. From OSU I went on to attend seminary in Berkeley California at the Pacific School of Religion. After three years of study I was awarded a Masters in Divinity Degree in 1989, and three months later ordained a Disciples of Christ minister. Three months after that I was called to my first pastorate as an Associate Minister at First Christian Church in Bakersfield, California.
In addition to my education and experience as a pastor, before ordained ministry I worked at a number of different jobs including gas station attendant, flower nursery laborer, cannery worker, cement foundation laborer and laboratory technician.
But my life really began in a little church in Albany called Faith Chapel. I had just begun working on that first associate degree when I discovered the Lord and asked God into my heart. I was never the same after that and have grown to appreciate the mystery and love of Christ since the breakthrough of God into my life. Although my initial dream was to become a chemist, it was religion that finally captured my heart, mind and imagination! I now see with depth and clarity that God has been leading me all my life, and I look forward to one day being with God in heaven.
I spend a considerable amount of time in prayer, meditation and study. I consider it an incredible privilege to be able to pastor to this remarkably caring and mission oriented church known as First Christian Church of Antelope Valley. I intend to share with my congregation the acquired knowledge and wisdom I have gained throughout my journey with God. Together we will care for each other as we discover, on a daily basis, what God has in store for us.
On September 27th, 2003 I married my beautiful and brave wife Karen and we have five grandchildren and a dog named Skylar.
